School Peace Projects

Classroom Connections has now made available its second module in the
Cultivating Peace Initiative called Taking Action.

This resource encourages students to examine their own beliefs regarding the
need for change in our world and their personal responsibility in taking
action.  The preconditions necessary for a culture of peace are explored
through the examination of global issues in sustained development, economic
disparity, fair trade, human rights and consumerism.  Students are given
opportunities to explore the range of actions possible, the ways in which
change occurs, the barriers to participation and the factors that support
youth involvement.  The resource includes a teacher's guide, a video, a
poster series and a student guide to taking action.  It is designed for use
in grades 10 - 12.

You can download this excellent 68 page document (as well as Module 1:
Cultivating Peace in the 21st Century) from the Classroom Connections web
site at http://www.cultivatingpeace.ca  .  I highly recommend it.   You can
also order free copies at info@classroomconnections.ca

Peace Poles
Peace poles ar in simple terms a pole in the ground with words like Peace, Peace on Earth, May Peace Prevail or similar.

It is usual for the pole to be in a public place like a school and for a dedication ceremony involving representatives from the council, the police, service clubs, churches, etc.

A special peace pole is made from two 4 meter strips of timber about 150mm x 30mm nailed together making a right angle for streanth and painted different colours to demonstrate that working together we do better and Make A Difference ( The school can give MAD awards).

Another way to show how together we do better is to fold a sheet of paper down the middle and see the extra stength of the paper at the join of the two sides of the right angle so formed.
